Setting up a NETGEAR router isn’t hard. However, there are some technicalities involved to ensure the setup goes smooth. In this blog post, we will teach you how to setup your NETGEAR router in case you have recently invested in our high-quality Wi-Fi routers.

There are two ways in which you can set up your NETGEAR router. To help you understand, we have listed down each step in detail.

Configuring NETGEAR Router for cable internet connection using Smart Wizard:

  1. Start by connecting your computer to one of its LAN ports and your modem to your router’s internet port.
  2. Now, switch off all your devices (computer, modem and router) and restart them again. Wait for the rebooting to finish.
  3. Once done, open an internet browser and in the address bar, type any one of your router’s IP address, and hit Enter.
  1. You will be asked to log in to your router using the default credentials. Note: Both the username and the password are case-sensitive.
  • Username: admin
  • Password: password
  1. After logging in, click on Setup Wizard and you will be directed to the Setup Wizard screen.
  2. Once there, choose ‘Yes’ and hit NEXT. At this point, the setup wizard will detect your internet connection. When using a cable connection, the wizard will detect the Dynamic IP.
  3. Lastly, select next. All your settings will now be saved.
  4. Click Next. The router saves the settings. Note: Do not change the default settings unless your internet service provider gave you specific DNS information that must be configured.

Configuring your NETGEAR router for cable internet connection using NETGEAR Genie:

  1. Begin by unplugging your router’s power code and modem. Also, remove your modem’s backup memory in case you have one.
  2. Next, connect an Ethernet cable to the internet port of your router and your modem.
  3. Connect another Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports in your router from your computer.
  4. Now, reconnect your modem, re-insert the backup battery, and wait for it to show all lights come to life with a stable streak.
  5. Next, wait for the light to become a solid green after you have reconnected the power to your router.
  6. Once done, open an internet browser on your screen and type in your router’s default IP Address; http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1, in the search bar and hit Enter.
  7. You will be asked to log in to your router using the default credentials.
  • Username: admin
  • Password: password

Nearly all NETGEAR devices (except a select few) use the same default credentials.

  1. After logging in, you will be directed to the Wizard Genie.
  2. Select ADVANCED on the left side of the menu and hit Setup Wizard.
  3. Choose ‘Yes’ from the two options and hit NEXT.

Note: At this point, the Wizard Genie will detect the speed and type of your internet connection. You may have to wait for a few minutes as the search happens. Once the detection is complete, you will be asked to type in the username and password given to you by your ISP.  Not all cable connections require this but some do.

  1. Once the configuration is completed by the setup wizard, you will be directed to a Congratulations To test if your internet connection is running smoothly, click on the “take me to the internet” button.
